Dr. Johnny L. Pherigo is currently retired, having spent a forty-year career as a musical performer (French Horn) and university music professor and administrator. He is Professor Emeritus from the University of Central Florida, where he served as music professor 2004–2016 and Music Department Chair 2004–09. He was a professor in the Western Michigan University School of Music 1983–2004, where he was Coordinator of Graduate Studies, Director of the MFA in Performing Arts Administration program, taught horn, and performed in the Western Brass Quintet and Western Wind Quintet. Previously he was a music professor at the University of Arkansas and Virginia Tech. He received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Illinois as well as music degrees from the Catholic University of America and Texas Tech University.

Dr. Pherigo is Past-President of the International Horn Society and served as Editor of the Horn Call, Journal of the International Horn Society. He hosted the 33rd International Horn Symposium at Western Michigan University. Pherigo was a member of the United States Air Force Band and principal horn of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. He has been a soloist, orchestra, and chamber musician on horn and natural horn throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.
